THANK YOU NOTES

The value of the thank you note:

  • Impresses employers with your follow-through.
  • Demonstrates your understanding of professional courtesy.
  • Conveys your interest in their company.
  • Provides you an opportunity to get back in front of the employer again, in case you have faded from the memory of an employer who met too many people too quickly.
  • Allows you to introduce information that you neglected to mention when you first met or to clarify any points.
  • Demonstrates your skill at written (mailed or emailed) communications.

Thank you note example:

Dear Mr. or Ms. [Last Name],

Convey thanks and reaffirm your interest in the company.  Mention something that you particularly like about their company.
Thank you for speaking with me on Thursday at CCM’s Internship Fair.  I appreciated learning about internship opportunities at [employer] and ….

Reference a point or two about your discussion to refresh their memory of you.  Briefly summarize your qualifications again.  Add any points you may have thought of after the meeting.
I found the description of your current projects very interesting. I have geared my studies toward commercial design, and logo creation is one of my strengths.  I have enclosed another copy of my resume and some samples of my recent work.

Close with a reiteration of thanks and your interest in the opportunity. Identify your understanding of the next steps in the process.
Again, thank you very much for your time.  I look forward to hearing from you / I understand that you will be contacting the Career Services office...

Best regards,
